Central Crossing Experiences
I had lived for ten years in the San Francisco Bay area. When I began the central crossing in California, I had relaxed and comfortable feelings as I cycled on familiar ground. I had a strong sense that the entire nation was my backyard. The sight of a train with three clean, bright yellow Union Pacific locomotives renewed my faith in the promise of this country. The second was painted with a large fluttering U.S. flag. Whatever it is about the charm of trains, I knew immediately that this cross-country journey was the right thing for me to do. I had been living in the Washington, DC area for too long, where I had been hearing too much of the politics, secrets, and lies. Bicycling across the country was the fix that I needed to renew my pride and gratefulness to be living in the United States.
