Northern Crossing Experiences
Rusty Burnwell had initiated the Big Ride Across America event in 1998. With GTE as the major sponsor, 720 cyclists pedaled across the United States on the GTE Big Ride with the support of 200 tour staff. With new sponsorship in 1999, 137 cyclists pedaled the event. In 2000, the Big Ride had 201 cyclists. Several tractor-trailers traveled with the riders and provided hot showers, toilets, a bicycle repair shop, professional kitchens, catering supplies, food, medical needs, and services staff. All three years, the event lost money. It had become a bicycling party. This was not what the Lung Association desired. They did not want people contributing to their charity so that these cyclists could have a fun, rolling, party. The Big Ride Across America was shut down.
