hour. On mornings with flat, smooth roads and no headwinds, I can start out strong and pedal at a faster pace. Twenty miles into the ride, however, I am worn out and return to my normal eleven mile-per-hour pace.
There are many different ways to partake in the bicycling sport. Some race. Lance Armstrong’s seven consecutive wins have made the Tour de France known to Americans. Many explore the far reaches of wilderness on mountain bikes. Families enjoy nature and their time together by cycling on trails converted from railways to public pathways (known as Rails-to-Trails) where they are safe from motorized vehicles. Neighbors tootle around on their bikes meeting and greeting others in the community. A few ride tricycles. Occasionally there are tricycles, which are extraordinary, low-slung mechanical marvels. Other riders recline on lounge chairs atop recumbent bicycles. Several cyclists take a week’s vacation to pedal across a state. Some take that enthusiasm farther and pedal their bicycles across the United States from sea to shining sea.
I have bicycled across the United States not once, but three times. Each coast-to-coast crossing was with a different bicycle touring organization. In 2002, at the age of forty-seven, I bicycled across the southern route. The following year, I bicycled across the northern tier on “The Big Ride Across America.” Two years later, when I was granted some time off work, I jumped at the opportunity to experience the central crossing.
This book is about some of my experiences on those three coast-to-coast crossings. I am an average bicyclist of average fitness. I am certainly not a lean, mean, muscle machine. I always need to lose five to ten pounds. Perhaps if I did lose those pounds, the climbs
